The polygraph examination, when conducted by a competent examiner, has up to a 95% accuracy rate. The polygraph instrument, which measures cardiovascular, respiratory, and electrodermal activity, is the most reliable available method today to determine truth or deception, and scientific evidence supports the high validity of polygraph examinations. Most polygraph techniques have a relatively complex set of procedures for asking questions and for measuring physiological responses recorded with the polygraph instrument. Test structure techniques which allow for numerical scoring and standard rules of interpretation have proven to be highly accurate. Polygraph examinations, when using established standardized testing methods, demonstrate reliability and validity, and with advancements in polygraph instrumentation, have resulted in the use of the polygraph techniques being subject to peer review and publication, and generally accepted among the scientific community.
